Soft Washing

September 15, 2019

Is the exterior of your home or building looking dingy, streaky, and even mildewy?

If you’re looking for the solution to a dirty exterior, you might have come across a solution called Soft Washing. Soft Washing rids homes and buildings of dirt, debris, mold, mildew, lichen, and moss. It works on many, if not all, exterior surfaces, including roofs, siding, decks, gutters and more.

Many homeowners are worried about black and green stains. This is a valid concern because most of these stains are caused by microorganisms growing on the exterior surface. If left to grow, these microorganisms will cause decay, rot, and damage, significantly decreasing the lifespan of your home or building.

Soft Washing is the only way to properly cleanse your home or building of microorganisms and ensures you’re maintaining the life of your home or building. Here is a little more info on Soft Washing, how it works, and what you can expect.

What is the Soft Washing process like?

Soft washing is different than power washing. During the Soft Washing process, our team uses a gentle spray of cleaning agents on all the surfaces that need to be cleaned. The specially formulated wash kills the algae all the way down to the roots. It also removes dirt and other debris.

Power washing, on the other hand, is much more destructive. It blasts off moss, lichen, mildew, and other algae, taking shingle granules and paints off right along with it. Moss and other rooted plants are ripped out of the surface, creating bigger holes and tears. You cannot power wash roofs. It will destroy them.

What happens after Soft Washing?

After the Soft Washing process is complete, you’ll notice an immediate difference in the cleanliness of exterior surfaces. If you had black algae stains on the roof, those should be mostly cleared up. If you had moss or lichen on your roof, it will take a little more time to dry up and fall off. Since it has roots, we don’t want to force it off the roof. That would damage it. The dead moss or lichen will eventually fall off itself, usually after a couple of powerful rainstorms.

How often do I need to get my roof Soft-Washed?

Once it’s been Soft Washed, your roof should look good for about five to six years. But, because everyone’s home is different, yours may need to be cleaned after more or less time. The major contributing factors to this are environmentally related. If you live surrounded by trees or if you live in a damper, darker area, it will be more likely you will need to have the roof cleaned sooner. Algae love moist and dark areas and will come back sooner in those conditions.

What type of warranty does the Soft Washing process have?

At IDW, we offer a limited five-year warranty on your entire roof cleaning. If the algae should return within the first year, our team will come back and spot clean the affected areas at no charge to you. If it returns within two to five years after the initial cleaning, we will clean the entire roof again at a reduced 50 percent of the retail cost.
